This course introduces students to issues associated with the teaching, speaking, and writing of the English language. We’ll pay special attention to debates about English in the 20th and 21st centuries, from global Englishes to vernacular dialects to “txtspeak” and “English only” legislation. Through readings and projects on these issues, we’ll consider how historical and cultural forces influence the teaching of English and what gets defined as “correct” and “literate” uses of language. The course can be used to fill teacher certification requirements.
