Syllabus

In this seminar, we’ll explore the shapes that literacy takes with new technologies, and what that means for us as writers and teachers in a time where technologies of writing appear to be rapidly shifting. We’ll look at the history of inscription technologies from clay tokens to the printing press to the Internet, with special attention to more recent literacy technologies—the World Wide Web, mobile devices, computers, video games, etc. We’ll explore theoretical perspectives on social factors shaping literacy and technology, and along the way, we’ll develop our own theories about the interactions between people, literacies and technologies.
