{"id":321,"date":"2016-04-04T17:04:53","date_gmt":"2016-04-04T22:04:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.annettevee.com\/2016spring_usesofliteracy\/?p=321"},"modified":"2016-04-04T17:04:53","modified_gmt":"2016-04-04T22:04:53","slug":"but-what-should-elementary-schools-teach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.annettevee.com\/2016spring_usesofliteracy\/but-what-should-elementary-schools-teach\/","title":{"rendered":"But What Should Elementary Schools Teach?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When comparing the two opinion pieces &#8220;What Should Colleges Teach?&#8221; and &#8220;Why Johnny Can&#8217;t Write&#8221; I was frustrated to see\u00a0that scholars have been\u00a0working more fervently on challenging\u00a0college courses, rather than those in elementary, middle and high school. While educating college students is obviously important, it is my personal belief that college students have had more time to practice reading as well as there\u00a0writing skills, and change should be occurring at a young age where all are receiving education.<\/p>\n<p>Stanley Fish proposes a series of steps to teach upper level students to write. These include, making sentences out of a random list of words, asking students to turn a three-word sentence into an 100-word sentence, and replacing nonsense words in famous text.
